Twitpics from Space Show Geomagnetic Aurora [PICS] par Jolie O'Dell Lundi 5 Avril 2010 :: Mashable! :: RSS
Known to many as the most prolific Twitter user aboard the International Space Station, astronaut Soichi Noguchi has graced the Internet with a few more gorgeous Twitpics of our planet — including a vivid aurora created by a geomagnetic storm.
The Japanese aeronautical engineer, who we first told you about back in February, has been snapping pics of various coastlines, launch sites, the moon, stars and a spacecraft docking on the station. He typically posts a few pics each day from his mobile to Twitter via Twitpic.
Noguchi flew to the ISS on December 20, 2009, and he’s scheduled to return in June 2010. He joined Twitter about six weeks before he went into orbit. During this time, he has published 1,000 tweets and accumulated around 174,000 followers. He and his fellow crewmates have taken more than 100,000 photos aboard the ISS.
To send Noguchi a message of support, use this form on his website or simply hit him up with an @reply on Twitter.

Clicker Aggregates iPad-Compatible Videos par Jennifer Van Grove Lundi 5 Avril 2010 :: Mashable! :: RSS
If our roundup of the 10 best sites for watching video on your iPad left you wanting more, web video aggregator Clicker.com has just released the iPad version of its site, offering fast access to all iPad-compatible video on the web.
Anyone on an iPad can visit Clicker.com via Safari to access the iPad-friendly site. Once there, you’ll find an impressive collection of videos of all varieties that you can watch on your iPad — no flash required.
Clicker sorts videos by category so that you can browse through TV, web originals, movies, music and trends. The homepage also highlights popular shows and trending episodes to give users insight into what everyone else is watching. You can even create an account or log in via Facebook Connect to save videos to a playlist.
To be clear, Clicker isn’t a video site, it’s merely an aggregator that connects you to video for your iPad by displaying viewing options for each available video. It is, however, designed to answer the question all of us new iPad owners want to know: Can I watch this on my iPad?
Clicker isn’t the perfect solution for video on your iPad — certain highlighted shows are only available to Netflix subscribers (so don’t get too excited about 30 Rock yet) — but it’s certainly a great place to start your quest for entertainment on your new device.

Huge thanks to everyone who has submitted tracks. If you sent us something and we haven’t included it yet, stay tuned for a future Free Music Monday. Here is how to submit your music to FMM:
Attention artists/labels: there are new submission guidelines for Free Music Monday. Please pick one track you’re willing to give away to Mashable readers as a free download and either a) include it as an attachment in your email to barb+FMM AT mashable DOT com (25 MB file size limit, please) or b) include a link to a location where we can download the song (if you want to use “in exchange for email” or other specific widgets to offer the track to Mashable readers that’s totally fine).
If you’d like to also point us to more of your work online where we can stream and/or download it, please feel free — but you must complete either a or b to be considered for Free Music Monday. Due to overwhelming submission volume we are sadly unable to include each and every submission or even reply to every inquiry. If we haven’t posted your track yet, you are welcome to submit another new track at a reasonable and totally not pushy time interval. If we’ve already posted a track from your band or artist, we are unlikely to double up and post something else from you for some time — as much as we love all of you! This makes FMM more diverse and inclusive of new music. Thanks!

Obama Throws First Pitch of Nats 2010 Baseball Season [VIDEO] par Jolie O'Dell Lundi 5 Avril 2010 :: Mashable! :: RSS
President Barack Obama has ushered in the 2010 baseball season for the Washington, DC Nationals, throwing the ceremonial first pitch at today’s game.
Sporting a red Nationals jacket, the president greeted players and military veterans before heading to the pitcher’s mound, where he threw on a Chicago White Sox cap in homage to his hometown team. Obama wound up and executed a wild — if presidential — toss that strayed high and to the left.
Last year, the Southpaw In Chief was mildly mocked for sporting “mom jeans” and, as some put it, a rather weak pitching style. This year, Obama was reported to have been practicing in the Rose Garden before the big game.
The tradition of presidents throwing the first pitch of a baseball season began exactly 100 years ago with William Taft, a baseball fan himself.

New HP Slate Demo Shows Off Camera and More [VIDEO] par Barb Dybwad Lundi 5 Avril 2010 :: Mashable! :: RSS
The HP Slate is the tablet Microsoft teased ever so briefly back at CES, and remains one of the few upcoming non-iPad tablets we know about that will run Windows 7. Earlier we saw HP touting the slate’s Flash support, and in a new demo video we see a few other jabs at features Apple’s iPad lacks.
Unfortunately it’s another short clip so we don’t get too much new information, but we do see an on-board SD slot, USB port, camera with video and videoconferencing support via Skype, and the ability to dock your slate and connect it to your TV. These features are all notably lacking from the iPad, and although HP has an uphill battle to wage against the overwhelming fervor accompanying Apple’s huge launch this weekend, it is a convenient “don’t forget there will be other tablet options” reminder.
Check out the video below, which also includes a look at the HP Slate’s rather slick user interface, and let us know what you think. What features would a tablet device need to upstage the iPad?

iReverse: One App, One Code Base, Seven Platforms par Jolie O'Dell Lundi 5 Avril 2010 :: Mashable! :: RSS
Developers are buzzing about a simple Reversi game that runs on Mac, Windows, Linux, iPad and a slew of other devices and operating systems.
What makes the app big news? “There isn’t a single line of code I had to change to get this app to run on all these different operating systems and devices,” said creator and Adobe product manager Christian Cantrell.
Multi-platform applications designed to run on a variety of operating systems, Internet browsers and mobile devices are typically a pain to code — so painful that it generally prevents game and app developers from releasing products on more than one platform at a time. For example, there are many more apps available for the iPhone than the Android because developers must rewrite significant portions of code to create functional apps for both platforms. It also doesn’t help that native apps for different operating systems are written in several different programming languages; iPhone developers have to work in Objective-C, while BlackBerry and Android developers must write their programs in Java.
In short, most apps are engineered to be mutually incompatible with multiple platforms. That’s why Cantrell’s iReverse is such a game-changer.
In this video, Cantrell shows the game running natively on Mac, Windows and Linux operating systems. He also demos the app on an iPod touch, a Droid and yes, an iPad. Finally, we see iReverse running in a Chrome web browser.
As he explains in the video, Cantrell used Flash Builder and ActionScript to create “platform-specific wrappers” for different devices without having to rewrite the app’s code base for each operating system. “It’s a little bit tricky, but I’m going to open-source the iReverse application so everyone can see the code.” Stay tuned to Cantrell’s blog for documentation and details.

Kevin Rose to Replace Jay Adelson as Digg CEO par Adam Ostrow Lundi 5 Avril 2010 :: Mashable! :: RSS
There’s a major shakeup to report at Digg today: Jay Adelson is stepping down as CEO, effective immediately. Adelson will be replaced by Kevin Rose, who founded the site back in 2004 and has to much extent remained the face of the company through his role as co-host of online video show Diggnation.
In a statement to be released shortly, Adelson says that “the entrepreneurial calling is strong, and I am ready to incubate some new business ideas over the next twelve months. As the economy exits a very deep recession, I believe that it is an excellent time for new companies to develop.”
While we don’t yet know what those ideas might be, the news comes in the midst of a major overhaul at Digg. I talked to Adelson in-depth about the new Digg last month, who described his company’s plans to reinvent itself as an aggregator of what people are sharing around the web. Since then, the company has moved swiftly into mobile, unveiling both iPhone and Android apps in recent weeks.
Now, execution of the company’s ambitious game plan falls squarely on Rose, who says of the shakeup that he is “excited to be taking on the role of Chairman and acting CEO, driving Digg forward on our promise to enable social curation of the world’s content and the conversation around it.” Nonetheless, this news comes as a huge surprise given the timing.
We’re hearing that the company held an all-hands morning moments ago to share the news with employees. More to come …
Jay Adelson Statement
Got some news. After five years, forty million users, and an amazing ride, I’ve decided to step down as CEO of Digg. With the new Digg getting ready to launch, Digg Ads doing well, our sales force growing, our hiring ramping, and the company maturing well beyond its startup phase, I feel that now is the right time.
The entrepreneurial calling is strong, and I am ready to incubate some new business ideas over the next twelve months. As the economy exits a very deep recession, I believe that it is an excellent time for new companies to develop. Of course, I will continue to serve as an adviser to Digg. In the interim, Kevin has agreed to step in as Chairman and CEO.
I’d like to thank Kevin, the Digg staff and the Digg community for their support, insight and, most of all, their loyalty in turning Digg
into the force that it is today.
Kevin Rose Statement
I want to be the first to thank Jay for the last five years of amazing work. You’ve been a great friend and mentor, we wouldn’t be where we are today if it wasn’t for you.
While I’ll miss working w/Jay day-to-day I am excited to be taking on the role of Chairman and acting CEO, driving Digg forward on our promise to enable social curation of the world’s content and the conversation around it. We’ve been super busy on the product side getting ready for the upcoming Digg redesign and delivering our mobile apps for the iPhone and Android.
Thank you very much for your on-going support of Digg, I’m truly excited about the next five years, big things coming!

Appcelerator Simplifies iPad App Development par Christina Warren Lundi 5 Avril 2010 :: Mashable! :: RSS
Today Appcelerator launches Titanium Tablet, a platform designed to help developers create apps for the iPad. Titanium is a free, Apache 2 licensed, cross-platform toolkit that lets web developers use JavaScript, CSS, HTML and scripting languages like Ruby or Python to build native apps for the iPhone, Android and now the iPad.
Building on the Titanium Mobile product, Titanium Tablet lets developers access all of the iPad’s native features — including user interface elements — without requiring knowledge of Objective-C or Cocoa.
Check out this video for Titanium Mobile. Although it describes Appcelerator’s mobile app development platform, it underlines many of the same elements of the Titanium Tablet product:
The concept of melding JavaScript/CSS3/HTML5 with native application elements and API calls to create native apps is pretty cool. Although a number of different solutions for cross-platform app development for the iPhone exist, like Mono Touch, Titanium is unique in its support for the native UI elements, which — let’s face it — are often what make an iPhone app look and feel like an iPhone app.
I’m interested in giving Titanium Tablet a try to see if I can speed up my development time (my Objective-C is a little rusty).
What do you think about tools for making iPhone, iPad or Android development less language-reliant? Let us know.

Tiger Woods Press Conference at The Masters Streams Live [VIDEO] par Samuel Axon Lundi 5 Avril 2010 :: Mashable! :: RSS
Tiger Woods is hosting his first news conference since returning to golf this afternoon at 2 p.m. ET, and CBS News and Ustream are teaming up to offer a live video feed of the event.
Tiger announced last month that he’d be returning to the sport and that The Masters at Augusta National would be his first stop, which is where today’s press conference takes place.
Last time Tiger hosted a press conference, he drew 683,000 online video viewers on Ustream. He did not take any questions from the press at that event, however.
If you’re hoping to watch the conference on your newly purchased iPad, you’re in for a small disappointment. While Ustream has announced plans to release an iPad app, it’s not live yet. You’ll have to settle for the iPhone version or just use your laptop or desktop computer instead.
We’ve embedded the video below so you can watch it here.
Update: We’ve added Livestream’s feed as well.

Interactive “Glee” Trailer Lets You Fan the Cast on Facebook [VIDEO] par Samuel Axon Lundi 5 Avril 2010 :: Mashable! :: RSS
The trailer of popular TV sitcom Glee’s return to FOX on April 13 has been bouncing around the Internet for a while now. But if you haven’t watched it yet, now’s the time: FOX has put up what it calls “the Glee hypertrailer” that plugs into Facebook, YouTube and other social media outlets.
Start the video and you’ll see head shots of each of the cast members along the bottom. From there you can click on individual cast members to fan them on Facebook. Once the video is done playing, you can follow the links to FOX’s Glee website and the Glee YouTube channel.
Glee’s producers is also holding a video casting call on MySpace, so this is not the first social media promotion for the show.
The hypertrailer is powered by software made by Coincident.TV, the same company that helped produce the interactive Avatar trailer. The software suite was also used in a content-rich broadcast of The Hills.
The Facebook-integrated trailer is not embeddable — neither was the Avatar one. If that’s a limitation of the technology, it’s an unfortunate downside. You’ll have to head over to FOX to watch it, but we’ve embedded the regular Glee mid-season premiere trailer without all of the social media bells and whistles below.
Standard Trailer
Update: Coincident.TV did not, in fact, create the interactive Avatar trailer.

3 Ways to Destroy an iPad [VIDEO] par Jennifer Van Grove Lundi 5 Avril 2010 :: Mashable! :: RSS
Whether for marketing, science or sport, some individuals are more interested in destroying the iPad than in maintaining its luster or finding the perfect case for the device.
Case in point: The three videos embedded below. Each has a different purpose, but the end result remains the same. You better believe that there were iPads harmed in the making of these videos.
It’s either total blasphemy or just the cure for your iPad hate, but either way it’s hard not to be fascinated by each of these iPad obliterations. Apple iPad lovers, shield your eyes.
Will the iPad Blend?
The answer in short is “Yes.” Is there anything this Blendtec blender can’t destroy?
The iPad Stress Test
PCWorld tests out the iPad’s sturdiness through a series of strenuous tests. One takeaway — apparently you can use coffee for navigation purposes, though I wouldn’t try that at home.
Teens Show No Mercy
These unfortunate iPads found themselves in the hands of some angry teenagers. What ensues is somewhat heartbreaking for those of us who braved the lines on Saturday and now try our best to keep our screens free of fingerprint residue.

Now that the iPad launch has passed with success, the time seems right to start discussing features in the next version of the iPhone OS. This will presumably run on both future iPhones and the new iPad.
Historically, Apple has released SDK information and details of its next major OS version each March. However, given the release of the iPad and the new information developers needed to prepare software for its launch, it would make sense to wait until after iPad’s release to start detailing iPhone 4.0 OS.
If Apple follows its past schedule, the SDK will be available to developers soon and the newest iPhone will be revealed at WWDC this June.

By the Numbers: Facebook vs The United States [INFOGRAPHIC] par Muhammad Saleem Lundi 5 Avril 2010 :: Mashable! :: RSS

Facebook’s official company statistics outline the breakdown of the sites over 400 million active users. While the site points out about 70% of Facebook users are outside the United States, it doesn’t dive deeper into the U.S. numbers.
To find out more about the average American Facebook user and how he or she compares to the average American, we dug a little further. After crunching the numbers and comparing the data, this is what we found.

Editor’s Note: The DC number is greater than 100% because of the disproportionate amount of people who technically reside elsewhere but live in DC, and it would include people in surrounding cities who claim to live in DC on their profiles.

Interview: Ben Folds Talks Chatroulette and Merton [VIDEO] par Brenna Ehrlich Lundi 5 Avril 2010 :: Mashable! :: RSS
When Merton the Chatroulette Piano Guy burst on the scene last month, a considerable number of people believed him to be musician Ben Folds. Folds, in turn, started making like Merton at concerts, uploading his “Odes to Merton” to YouTube. Mashable recently sat down with Folds via Skype to talk about Merton, Chatroulette and whether he is, in fact, the man behind the hood.
Merton the Chatroulette Piano Guy garnered his fair share of fame from going on the video chat site and composing improvisational songs on his piano about the people he encountered there. Mashable recently spoke with the man, who prefers to remain anonymous, about his musical aspirations as well as striking resemblance to Ben Folds.
Many of you (including some Mashable staffers) remained unconvinced that Merton and Folds are not one-in-the-same. After Folds released his final “Ode to Merton” last week, we decided to contact the musician and get the lowdown on his foray into the infamous social site.
After speaking with Folds, I’m pretty much 100% sure that he and Merton are not the same person. Check out the interview below if you’re still not convinced, as well as our original interview with Merton himself.

5 Tips for Using LinkedIn to Find Star Employees par Sharlyn Lauby Lundi 5 Avril 2010 :: Mashable! :: RSS
This post originally appeared on the American Express OPEN Forum, where Mashable regularly contributes articles about leveraging social media and technology in small business.
Successful business people are always looking for their next rock star employee. The question is where do you find them? The good news is that the latest LinkedIn stats – 60 million professional profiles spanning 200 countries – would indicate this is a good place to look.
Many of us already have a LinkedIn account, and if you don’t, LinkedIn is free and easy to maneuver. The trick is incorporating some strategies (habits, if you will) into using LinkedIn.
Below are five easy things you can add to your LinkedIn strategy to give you greater exposure to top talent.
1. Build Connections
In the course of your daily business, you never know where your next sale is going to come from. The same can be true for recruiting. It’s important to connect and build relationships with a variety of different people. For example, my LinkedIn profile has connections from prior jobs, clients, and local entrepreneurs I do business with. It’s great when I can make introductions between people with varied needs.
2. Join Groups

In addition to being a part of groups for your personal and/or professional benefit, join a couple of groups that might help surface candidates. Let’s say you’re always looking for sales professionals. There’s a LinkedIn group – The Sales Association – that you might want to join as a way to connect with possible candidates. They have almost 20,000 members, are affiliated with a national association, and have a job posting system when you’re ready to let people know about your next opening.
3. Engage with Questions and Answers
Once you start connecting with groups, look for opportunities to engage with people in discussions. Notice people who share your culture and enter into a conversation with them. I belong to a group called Social Media in Organizations. This group offers multiple channels to talk about workplace social media – discussions, webinars, articles, a book club, etc.
4. Get (and Read) LinkedIn Updates
This is a quick and easy way to recognize people for promotions, awards, and accomplishments. People will remember you. Since much of your LinkedIn profile is static, this is a way to regularly let people know what you’re up to. I’ve seen some of my connections post in their status “Looking for a Senior Accountant. Got a lead? Let me know.”
5. Embrace Mobile

Keeping up with all of the information available can be a daunting task. That’s why I like the mobile version of LinkedIn for my phone. I can check updates while I’m waiting at appointments, so staying on top of the activity doesn’t have to be a time-consuming chore. LinkedIn offers versions for the iPhone, BlackBerry, and Palm.
Over the years, LinkedIn has taken some hits for being nothing more than an online repository of names. But these days, more and more people are becoming reacquainted with it. Since most people have a presence on LinkedIn, it’s an obvious place to keep tabs on what’s happening in the marketplace. And as small business owners, you can easily leverage LinkedIn to find talent.

iPad Stats: More Than 300,000 Sold on First Day, 1 Million Apps Downloaded par Stan Schroeder Lundi 5 Avril 2010 :: Mashable! :: RSS
Apple announced on Monday morning that it sold more than 300,000 iPads in the U.S. on the first day of sales, including “deliveries of pre-ordered iPads to customers, deliveries to channel partners and sales at Apple Retail Stores.”
Furthermore, iPad users downloaded more than one million apps from the App Store and 250,000 e-books from the iBookstore on the first day.
Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster estimated that 600,000-700,000 units were sold over the weekend — his estimate, however, was too optimistic. The numbers are still fantastic, and we’re glad Apple checked the wild predictions floating on the web. Once the initial frenzy subsides and the 3G model hits the market, we’ll have a better idea of whether the iPad really is a game changer, as Steve Jobs suggests.

iPad Peek: See How Your Website Looks on the iPad par Stan Schroeder Lundi 5 Avril 2010 :: Mashable! :: RSS
The iPad is finally available, and it’s already residing in the hands of some 300,000 people who purchased it on launch day. In a couple of months, the iPad user base will become big enough for web developers to start paying attention to how their websites look on the iPad.
iPad Peek is a nifty tool that lets you see how any website will be rendered on the iPad. Click on the top border to switch from landscape to portrait mode. The virtual keyboard and the buttons on the iPad browser are just for show, but the reload button works.
Previewing a website in iPad Peek doesn’t offer the “real” iPad experience, however; for example, Flash works (and it shouldn’t). To get closer to the real deal, you should disable the Flash plugin in your browser and change the user agent string to that of the Apple iPad.
To do this last bit in Firefox, type “about:config” in the address bar, click the right mouse button, select New – String, and name it “general.useragent.override”. Then enter the value “Mozilla/5.0 (iPad; U; CPU OS 3_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/531.21.10 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.4 Mobile/7B334b Safari/531.21.10″.

First iPad Jailbreak Shown on Video par Stan Schroeder Lundi 5 Avril 2010 :: Mashable! :: RSS
Well, that was fast. A well-known iPhone jailbreaker MuscleNerd claims he managed to obtain root access on the iPad, and he backs it up with a video of how it’s done.
To do this, he has used a port of Comex’s “Spirit” jailbreak, which works on both iPhone OS 3.1.3 and the iPad’s 3.2.
This is just a demonstration; there’s nothing for you to download just yet. But if you doubted that iPad will ever be jailbroken, this should set your mind at ease.

Baja California Earthquake: YouTube Videos par Pete Cashmore Lundi 5 Avril 2010 :: Mashable! :: RSS
A magnitude-7.2 earthquake shook Baja California today, with the quake being felt from San Diego to Mexicali and even Phoenix.
Images immediately appeared on Twitter (see Mexicali earthquake photos), but we’re now seeing home videos being uploaded to YouTube, giving a more complete picture of the quake. Yet again, it seems social media has a role to play in our understanding of significant news events.
In California, where most of these videos were shot, early reports suggested a long, rolling quake which sent chandeliers swinging and pools overflowing, but causing little damage.
HuffPo also has a roundup of videos from the quake.

Google Buzz Privacy Reset Coming Tomorrow par Ben Parr Lundi 5 Avril 2010 :: Mashable! :: RSS
In an effort to address mounting criticism of the privacy issues surrounding Google Buzz, the search giant is going to ask all Buzz users to confirm or change their privacy settings tomorrow.
In an announcement that will be coming soon, Google will admit that they “didn’t get everything right,” which has resulted in serious privacy tweaks since its launch. However, many users weren’t affected by these changes because they had activated Google Buzz before the privacy updates.
Now in a renewed effort to correct its gaffs, the search company is going to ask all Google Buzz users to confirm (or change) their Buzz settings. This will be gradually rolled out tomorrow, but the result will be that every user will be prompted with a confirmation page the next time they click the Buzz tab.
It will look something like this:

The page isn’t anything new — it’s really just the Google Buzz settings page. However, Google’s taking a step in the right direction by giving every user a big opportunity to change their privacy settings. It had to be done.
While tomorrow’s move won’t fix the damage that has already been done, perhaps it’ll help get Congress off of its back. If it can appease critics on the privacy issues, then it can tackle the bigger challenge: making Google Buzz into a competitive threat to Twitter and Facebook.

Mexicali Earthquake Photos: Twitter Tells the Story [PICS] par Samuel Axon Lundi 5 Avril 2010 :: Mashable! :: RSS
A magnitude-7.2 earthquake shook Baja California on the afternoon of Sunday, April 4. It was felt from San Diego to Mexicali to Phoenix. There was some damage, but thankfully, casualties were low.
We turned to Twitter for a closer look at the earthquake’s impact on the communities along the Pacific. These photos of the damage in Mexicali and other locales were shared via Twitter and TwitPic this afternoon by people who experienced the earthquake first-hand.
We saw it (perhaps more aptly) after the Chile earthquake, too: Social media can make personal experiences universal. Twitter advocates like to talk about how much more quickly news and images can get out through the service, but that’s not the only thing that’s changed in today’s world as a result of social media.

Deepak Chopra Apologizes for Starting Earthquake on Twitter par Samuel Axon Lundi 5 Avril 2010 :: Mashable! :: RSS
Alternative physician and transcendental meditation guru Deepak Chopra used his Twitter account to apologize for causing the 7.2-magnitude earthquake felt in California and parts of Mexico and the southwestern United States on Sunday, April 4.
He was probably just kidding, of course, but his tweets made for an entertaining Twitter moment regardless. Shortly after the earthquake occurred, Chopra tweeted out the following:

He explained further in his next tweet, saying:

CNN reports that the earthquake originated in Baja California at 3:40 PM Pacific time and then spawned five aftershocks, including a 4.1-magnitude shake in the northern California town of Santa Rosa. There haven’t been any reports of significant casualties or damage despite the severity of the initial quake, but the quake was felt as far away as Phoenix, Arizona.
TwitPics of the earthquake have been floating around, but most of them show minor disorder like fallen items in convenience store aisles. It doesn’t look anything like what we saw out of Chile. However, Twitter lit up right away; “Baja California” is currently a trending topic.

Yahoo Entertainment on iPad: Not Just a News Reader [Video Review] par Samuel Axon Lundi 5 Avril 2010 :: Mashable! :: RSS
Mashable Apple guru Christina Warren took some time out of her holiday to sit down with a video camera, an iPad and the nifty Yahoo Entertainment [iTunes link] iPad app; what resulted was this video walkthrough and review.
When you load the app, it presents its features within a virtual rendition of a home theater, with a TV and an ottoman. That kind of visual flair is one of the things the iPad’s multi-touch interface does best. From that home theater you can access news, videos, TV listings and schedules, and more.
Our impressions of the app are positive — particularly of the news layout and the home theater motif in the presentation. Watch the review below to see all the features in motion; we’re finding that iPad apps are best demonstrated and reviewed in videos because of their visual and aural elements, though this one is obviously easier to figure out without a video than Smule’s Magic Piano.
If you have your own iPad and it’s all set up, you can download the Yahoo! Entertainment app for free from the Apple App Store right now. Be sure and let us know if you have any insights of your own if you decide to give it a spin.

Soloist Performs Beyoncé and Lady Gaga on Four iPhones [VIDEO] par Samuel Axon Dimanche 4 Avril 2010 :: Mashable! :: RSS
A girl going by the YouTube handle Applegirl002 has performed very accurate covers of Lady Gaga’s “Poker Face” and Beyoncé’s “Irreplaceable” solo using four iPhones. She set up the phones in her living room, pointed a video camera at the rig, and performed.
For “Irreplaceable,” (currently at 885,920 views) she just used three iPhones, but she started the four-phone “Poker Face” video (1,167,000 views) by demonstrating which apps she was using and how she was using them to put together the composition. One iPhone — the one oriented like a microphone — was running the I Am T-Pain [iTunes link] Auto-Tune app. Two were running the BeatMaker [iTunes link] looping app an the other was running an unspecified analog synthesizer app.
There have been other musical iPhone performances in the past, often using Smule’s Ocarina app — for example, the Stanford iPhone orchestra. This girl has made herself a YouTube star within just a couple weeks, though. Her performances are already among the most popular iPhone music videos. Don’t be surprised if she puts out another one for her fans soon.

Analyst: 700,000 iPads Sold [REPORT] par Pete Cashmore Dimanche 4 Avril 2010 :: Mashable! :: RSS
The latest estimates for iPad sales may surprise even the most optimistic Apple watchers: Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster puts the number at 600,000-700,000 this weekend, including pre-orders.
By comparison, it took Apple more than 70 days to sell 1 million iPhones after the initial launch.
Brainstorm Tech writes:
In a report to clients issued Saturday night, Munster’s estimated that by midnight Sunday, Apple will have sold 600,000 to 700,000 iPads, including pre-orders — more than double his relatively conservative pre-launch estimate of 200,000 to 300,000. (Other analysts had published estimates of 300,000 to 400,000.)
…It took Apple 74 days to sell its first million units of the original iPhone, and three days each to sell a million units of the iPhone 3G and the iPhone 3Gs.
The estimates were made after Munster’s team put in calls to Apple stores around the country, although it’s worth questioning how accurate that method might be.

Top 10 Recut Movie Trailers on YouTube [VIDEOS] par Amy-Mae Elliott Dimanche 4 Avril 2010 :: Mashable! :: RSS
The recut trailer has become an art form in its own right, with the trend to mix-up existing trailer or film footage to give the montage new meaning taking off back in 2005 when a competition from the Association of Independent Creative Editors led to The Shining being recut as a family comedy.
We’ve picked ten of the best that add a horror angle to the most light-hearted of films, and show just what’s possible with clever editing, emotive music and of course, voice-over man’s authoritative input. See our selection below and let us know any of your favorites in the comments.
1. Mary Poppins
One of the original recut trailers shows just how powerful the technique is by taking the upbeat, song-filled Mary Poppins and turning it into “Scary Mary,” a bone-chilling horror. A spoonful of sugar, this ain’t.
2. Uncle Buck
If you thought the scariest thing about Uncle Buck was John Candy’s back-firing Mercury Marquis coupe, then this recut will make you see the John Hughes flick with new eyes — new, scared eyes.
3. Amelie
We always knew there was something sinister about Amelie, and this trailer edits the original film beautifully to show a darker side of the French waitress. Though we’re let down slightly by a poor voice-over, it’s nonetheless worth a watch.
4. Sleepless in Seattle
Nora Ephron takes an uncharacteristic stroll on the dark side when a call into a radio advice show looks to have triggered an obsession that will almost certainly end in tragedy for Seattle resident Sam Baldwin and his young son Jonah.
5. Office Space
All hell breaks lose at Initech in this clever recut that turns the geek fave into a chilling thriller. You’ll never look at a red Swingline stapler in quite the same way again.
6. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
Gone are the fun teenage antics as Edward Rooney becomes a crazed killer in this version of Ferris Bueller, set on Friday 13th.
7. Toy Story
It’s not just Sid’s freakish playthings that will give you willies in this take on Toy Story. Sentient toys pose a threat to children, and in fact all mankind, in this animated horror fest from Pixar. Play nice…
8. Home Alone
Old Man Marley takes center stage as the shovel murderer in another re-imagined John Hughes movie.
9. Groundhog Day
There’s no cute marmot in this version of Groundhog Day, in which Bill Murray’s deja vu takes a decidedly darker turn.
10. The Shining
We’re ending the list with the classic The Shining recut that takes the opposite approach to the videos above, turning a terrifying thriller into a family-friendly romantic comedy. That Jack Torrance sure looks like a swell guy…

Super Monkey Ball for iPad: Is It Worth $10? [Video Review] par Jennifer Van Grove Dimanche 4 Avril 2010 :: Mashable! :: RSS
One of the downsides of the iPad is that the paid applications are significantly more pricey than the apps available for the iPhone. Sure the iPad is designed to take the app experience — especially around gaming — to the next level, but does the supersized screen warrant a supersized price?
I promptly paid for and downloaded Super Monkey Ball 2 for iPad [iTunes link] to find out firsthand. Watch the video below to find out whether or not this app is a hit or miss and worth the expense.

Magic Piano for iPad Is Music to Our Ears [Video Review] par Christina Warren Dimanche 4 Avril 2010 :: Mashable! :: RSS
Magic Piano by Smule was one of the iPad apps we couldn’t wait to try; now we’ve tried it and we’re in love. While many view the iPad as a device to consume content, if Magic Piano is any indication it’s also going to be a device to help create music.
I got to speak to Dr. Ge Wang, the co-founder, CTO and CCO at Smule yesterday about the development process for Magic Piano, the differences in developing for the iPad versus the iPhone and what the iPad might mean for the future.
Wang, an Assistant Professor at Stanford University’s Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics, really wanted to build an application specifically for the iPad and one that would show off the devices best features.
Working around the clock for just over two months, the team at Smule built Magic Piano to be both an experiment and working proof of concept, as well as an app that could be fun and creative.
Check out this video demonstration that I made earlier today, showing off Magic Piano for iPad:
Wang told me that the size of the screen was both a big inspiration for the app and also something that was highly important in the development process. Unlike the iPhone, which can have 5 multitouch points hit at one time, the iPad has 10. That means you can literally put all of your fingers on the iPad and play or create different sounds.
As for the circular piano shape – while part of that was out of utility — you can fit more keys on screen if you do something in a circle or a spiral — it was also to add a sense of whimsy and fun to the app.
As for the challenges in developing for the iPad versus the iPhone, Wang told me that because the technologies are similar, the size of the device was what was most important to consider. As a side note, it’s clear the company also spent some time dealing with the physics of the device and how the app works; it is something that you can easily use from multiple angles, whether you have it in one hand or propped up on your knees.
Wang sees the iPad as having tremendous potential for the creation of music. Looking at Magic Piano, I have to agree. If this is what you can create in two months as a proof of concept and experiment, who knows what could be built in the next six!
Magic Piano (which costs $2.99) is in many ways the spiritual successor to Ocarina for the iPhone. By that I mean it’s a concept that is simple but brilliant, and one that can truly capture the power of a new device in a way that you may never have considered.
Disclosure: Mashable’s Ben Parr is working with Smule on an unannounced project.

How a Facebook Group Helped Reunite a Band for Charity par Josh Sternberg Dimanche 4 Avril 2010 :: Mashable! :: RSS
Josh Sternberg is the founder of Sternberg Strategic Communications and authors The Sternberg Effect. You can follow him on Twitter.
In July 2008, David Katz, an investment firm employee in New York City, searched for one of his favorite bands, God Street Wine, on Facebook to see what he could find. The only results showed people listing the band in their profiles. There was no official band page, no Fan Page — nothing. So, he decided to create a group petitioning one of his favorite bands to come out of retirement.
In an e-mail interview, Katz said “…I missed hearing and seeing their music live, so I figured why not [start a Facebook group] and didn’t think much would come of it or many people would join.” He was wrong.
The Band
God Street Wine (or GSW), a NYC-based rock band, formed in 1988, recorded 6 albums, toured nationally with the H.O.R.D.E. festival on four occasions, and developed a strong fan base throughout the country.
GSW opened for rock legends The Black Crowes and The Allman Brothers and served as an influential voice in the burgeoning “jam band” scene of the early 1990s. They played thousands of shows around the country, creating a Phish-like community fan base, and played alongside popular crossover artists like The Spin Doctors and Blues Traveler.
Sadly for their fans, God Street Wine played their last show as a unit at the now defunct Wetlands Preserve in NYC in December 1999 (they did, however, play a reunion gig when they were part of a farewell show for the Wetlands in September 2001).
The Reach of Facebook

But now, due in large part to Katz’s Facebook group, GSW is returning to the stage for four nights — two sold-out shows at The Gramercy Theater and two shows with some tickets remaining at Irving Plaza — in New York City. Even God Street Wine’s drummer, Tom Osander, was surprised by the results from Facebook.
“I recall the day that pre-sale tickets went up for the Gramercy shows,” Osander told me in an e-mail interview. “I was getting reports within the first fifteen minutes that people were not able to make a purchase and I figured that Ticketmaster was having one of its infamous logjams. It turned out that because so many people were in the loop on the pre-sale announcement, tickets had actually already sold out.”
The band offered up pre-sale tickets to members of the Facebook group. As of this writing, there over 1,400 fans in the group. I asked Tom about his thoughts of Facebook’s role in reuniting the band.
“I won’t say that we couldn’t have done it without Facebook, but it certainly wouldn’t have been as easy. Facebook and the other networking sites we utilized to promote these shows are still very new in the history of popular music, but they’ve already taken the lead and even replaced much of the traditional devices such as postal mailing lists, print media or radio, and posters used when the band was in its heyday back in the 90s. There is no way we could have reached as many people as quickly, and without spending a fortune on promo were it not for the Internet and Facebook.”
Social Media Changed the Game for Bands
Online marketers agree. According to Alan Saltz, owner of Guaranteed Marketing, Inc, “[Social networks] offer virtually everything a band needs to build a thriving online community — the traffic, the targeting, the viral capability, the music, functions like list building and user-generated content … it’s all there. And unlike traditional websites, the fans themselves really drive the experience, which is exactly what you want.”
Prior to the web and social media, bands used to rely on keeping a mailing list. Osander walked me through how much times have changed.
“I remember how I used to look after the GSW mailing list back in the early days. Even when there were only a few hundred names, it could take a day or two to design the gig list cards, get them printed, hand stamp each card, print the address labels, re-print the address labels after they jammed in the printer … and so on. Hell, there was a time when each name and address were hand-written each month. You couldn’t have paid me enough to do all that today.
“With these shows we were able to get the word out to thousands of people across the web (and world), announce on sale dates and sell the shows out all in a very short period of time. Truly night and day compared to our old method.”
Music for a Cause
While GSW’s reunion is exciting for fans, there’s a bigger goal. According to the band’s web site, they are no longer a for-profit band. The proceeds from all four shows are going directly to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
Osander told me, “Our former lighting director/stage manager and friend Mike Weiss was diagnosed with MS a few years ago and has spent a good deal of his time since then fundraising for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. When he came to us back in October asking if we’d consider raising some money for MS and also commemorating the anniversary of the passing of our old friend Paul Ducharme, we didn’t hesitate. So these shows, while first and foremost are benefit concerts, they also are important to the band and friends of Paul as a kind of tribute. His passing, after all, was the reason the five of us got back together last year, after eight years, and has again played a part in our decision to reform for these dates in July.”
Conclusion
Social networks have created innovative and fun ways of spreading information for bands, and it appears, at least in this case, a way of resurrecting them.
As Osander concluded, “Was I surprised by all of this? A bit. I knew the power, scope and capabilities of the Internet. Was I delighted with the way things went? Absolutely. And I received not a single paper cut.”

HOW TO: Get Started with the iPad par Jennifer Van Grove Samedi 3 Avril 2010 :: Mashable! :: RSS
The iPad has landed and although you’ve likely been reading about it for weeks — if not months — now we can finally explore what Apple’s new device is capable of doing.
Given that the device is new to all of us, we thought it appropriate to walk you through the steps to set up your iPad. We’ve also included some basic tips for getting the most out of your device.
iPhone and iPod Touch owners will find the setup process and device mechanics familiar. If you’re new to Apple mobile devices, don’t fret. As long as your iPad anticipation doesn’t get the best of you, you can be up and running in no time.
Walkthrough: Get Your iPad Set Up
Once you unbox your iPad, you’ll immediately want to connect the iPad’s USB cable to your default home machine and open iTunes. When iTunes launches you’ll be asked to activate the iPad, agree to its Terms and Conditions, and register your device.
iTunes will serve as your iPad’s backup system and will suggest that you restore your iPad from a previous iPhone or iPod Touch backup if you have one of those devices or start with a clean content slate on your iPad. Given that there are now thousands of iPad-specific apps and a restore could take awhile, we recommend starting fresh.
Next, you can choose to automatically sync applications, photos, music and videos. Choose wisely — depending on your media inventory, the initial sync process could take awhile. We recommend deselecting the automatic sync options and customizing your iPad preferences via iTunes after this step (read the section below for further instructions).
You can also skip the iTunes process temporarily if your iPad was activated at the Apple Store. Simply fire up the App Store on the iPad to immediately immerse yourself in the app experience (here are a few we like). If you opt to download an app, you will need to enter your iTunes account information.
As for setting up your email, the process on an iPad is similar to the email setup process for the iPhone and iPod touch. Select your email program, enter your login credentials and you’re good to go.
Now you’re pretty much ready for action, but before you go app crazy in the App Store, take a few moments to manage your iPad via iTunes.
Manage Your iPad via iTunes

iTunes on your laptop or desktop will serve as your iPad’s home base. After the initial setup process, you will want to customize your iPad’s media content and configure your settings. Start by selecting your iPad in iTunes; it’s located under the Devices label in the left-hand menu bar.
This will initially pull up the Summary page. Tab through the top navigation menu items (each listed below) to tweak your settings for individual media types. Keep in mind that for each pre-selected option you tick or untick, iTunes will display an “Apply” button in the bottom right-hand corner. Clicking that will start the sync process, so hold off on that action until you’re ready.
Summary: Here you can view a basic overview of your iPad settings, review your capacity, check for updates, restore the default settings, opt to automatically open iTunes when you connect your iPad and select sync options.
Control freaks will want to tick the “Manually manage music and videos” checkbox to handpick music and videos to sync to the iPad. Otherwise, iTunes will autofill the iPad library with as much content as it can manage.
This is also where you will go when you need to reference your iPad’s Identifier (UDID). Click on “Serial Number” and iTunes show you your UDID. Should app developers provide you with a preview version of their app, they’ll need your UDID number to get you set up.
Info: From the Info tab you can choose to sync your address box contacts, iCal calendars, mail accounts, and Safari notes and bookmarks. In the advanced section you can elect to have iTunes sync your iPad’s contacts, calendars and mail accounts with your computer.
Apps: This is where you’ll go to manage your iPad apps. If you own an iPhone or iPod Touch, you’ll notice that all of the apps you already own are pre-populated here. Select the apps that you want to appear on your iPad from the left-hand menu, which can by sorted by name, category or date. You can then drag-and-drop the ticked apps to switch them from one iPad page to another. You can also drag-and-drop individual pages to rearrange them.
Music: The music tab will let you sync your entire music library or individually-selected playlists, artists and genres. Should you select the latter, you can manage those songs from the Music option below your iPad in the Devices section of the left-hand menu.
Movies: In this section you can manage the movies that will be synced with your iPad. Use the drop down menu to specify whether you want to automatically sync all movies or just some of them. You can also scroll down to select to sync individual movie playlists.
TV Shows: The TV Shows tab is very similar to the Movies section though, by default, all unwatched episodes of your shows will be loaded onto your iPad. To keep your iPad from reaching capacity too quickly, we recommend only syncing shows that you plan to watch in the immediate future. If you’re a frequent traveler, you should revisit this section prior to any trip and load the shows you want to watch before takeoff.
Podcasts, iTunes U and Books: Each of these tabs offers similar syncing options as the Movies and TV Shows tab. You can “sync all” or select specific content to load on to your iPad.
Photos: Photos will consume space on your iPad, so keep that in mind as you select between syncing all photos and individual albums and videos.
Master the Basics

Here are a few tips to keep in mind once you start playing with your new toy.
Location Services: If you don’t want your iPad to register your physical location you can turn off Location Services in the General section of the native Settings app. Default is set to “on,” meaning that apps that show location data will ask you to share your location on launch.
Email Signatures: To create an email signature, select the Mail option within the Settings app. Scroll down, select “Signature” and type away. Just be forewarned that the default “Sent from iPad” signature might piss off your iPad-less friends.
Taking Screenshots: You can snap a shot of your iPad display by holding down the home button and the black power button at the same time. Screenshots are saved as photos in your iPad photo library.
Push Notifications: The iPad supports push notifications that you can manage via the native Settings app. You can universally turn notifications on or off, or customize notifications on a per-app basis in the “Notifications” section.
Display Lock: Slide the black button (right above the volume buttons) up or down to lock the display into landscape or portrait mode.
Double-Size Apps: All apps that are not iPad-specific can be double-sized by selecting “2x” after launching the app.

Can You Blog From an iPad? I Just Did par Ben Parr Samedi 3 Avril 2010 :: Mashable! :: RSS
Disclaimer: I wrote and published this post, in its entirety, from my iPad.
Apple’s “magical and revolutionary device” is supposed to be the ultimate content consumption tool. You can play music, watch movies, and surf the web, all from a device that is meant to be smaller, more focused, and more elegant than a netbook or even a laptop.
For content creators though, there has been a strong amount of skepticism. Without the mouse and keyboard interface, how fast can you really type emails, photoshop pictures, and build code with just a touchscreen?
These are questions that will be answered over the next few weeks as content creators push the iPad to its limits. In the meantime though, I’ve decided to run an initial test by writing an entire blog post from scratch, using the WordPress iPad app to fill the webpage you are reading now with elegant text.
Here are some of my raw observations:
- The act of typing itself is not too bad at all, especially if you do it in landscape mode. I was able to type pretty quickly with most of my fingers. Most mistakes were autocorrected. I am pleasantly surprised by the results.
- With that said, girls with longer fingernails will get annoyed with keys that don’t press when they want them to.
- I will just come out and say it: typing with HTML is a pain in the ass. I got better with it over the course of this post, but I hope I don’t build many lists on the iPad.
- Copy and Paste didn’t function properly for me. I don’t know if that is me being an idiot or the interface, but I wanted to bring it up.
- I can see images being a pain. If you have photos or screenshots on the iPad, it’s real easy to add them via WordPress. If you want a specific image size (like the ones you see on the top of most Mashable posts), then it’s more difficult. I bet there will be great image editing apps very soon to fix this issue, though.
- I am far less inclined to add links in posts because it’s such a pain to retrieve them and copy them into WordPress. A feature to easily link to other pages on your blog would make sense, along with a way to quickly browse the web from the WordPress app.
Overall, you can type rather fast on Apple’s tablet, although I will use the iPad to edit rather than write posts. It is no replacement for my laptop, but if you want to get up a quick post on-the-go, the iPad does a decent job.

Twitter Creator’s Credit Card Scanner Comes to iPad par Samuel Axon Samedi 3 Avril 2010 :: Mashable! :: RSS
The iPad already has an app for credit card transactions thanks to Twitter creator Jack Dorsey’s Square project.
Originally planned for the iPhone, the app works with a peripheral credit card scanner that attaches to the headphone jack. Once the scanner is in place, you can use your iPad as a mobile cash register.
Customers will be impressed by the multi-touch interface, and they will be able to sign for their purchases on the screen. The app then verifies the credit card transactions through Square’s servers for a flat fee plus a small percentage of the sale.
In some cases, this application will be easier than using a regular credit card machine. An art dealer, for instance, could approach a potential buyer at a gallery opening with the iPad in hand to make a sale.
After the sale is completed, you can send receipts to customers via e-mail or SMS. Here are some pics.

iPad’s File System Suggests New Apple Devices on the Way par Ben Parr Samedi 3 Avril 2010 :: Mashable! :: RSS
Although Apple rivals the Fortress of Solitude when it comes to unreleased products — remember all of the speculation around the iPad? — the Cupertino-based company does leave clues about what is to come. A look into the iPad OS’s file system suggests that we can expect not one, but two iPhones in the near future, along with the next-generation iPod touch and the next-generation iPad.
In the configuration, you can see a list of devices based on the iPhone OS model. However, there have been some new additions to this list following the iPad’s launch: iPhone3,2; iPhone3,3; iPod4,1 and iProd2,1.
For reference, the current model of the iPhone is 3,1, the current iPod Touch is 3,1 and the current iPad is iPad 1,1. You may recall that Apple used the iProd 0,1 tag as a placeholder for the iPad before it was released. Our guess is that iProd 2,1 refers to the second generation iPad.

Again, this is merely speculation, but these property lists have been a solid indicator of new products on the horizon before. The simple fact that two iPhones are listed in the property list adds momentum to rumors that Apple will release a Verizon iPhone soon.

10 Great Sites for Watching Video on Your iPad par Barb Dybwad Samedi 3 Avril 2010 :: Mashable! :: RSS
By now you’re probably well aware that the shiny new iPad is missing something: support for Adobe Flash content. Even Adobe called out Jobs and co. for its omission on the device that will herald the renaissance of the tablet computing form factor (maybe).
Still, despite the prevalence of Flash use in popular video sites and casual games, you won’t be left completely out in the cold when it comes to watching video on your iPad, thanks in large part to the advent of the next-generation web standard, HTML5.
Though still in essentially early days, HTML5 is getting enough buzz and support to at least give it a localized victory over Flash in our recent Mashable poll. Adobe itself sees the two technologies co-existing for some time yet to come, but what about Apple iPad owners who simply want to watch some video content right now? Check out our list of video sites below that support viewing content without requiring Flash support, whether via adopting HTML5 or via some other means.
1. YouTube

Luckily, the reigning champion in monthly video views announced support for HTML5 a couple of months ago. Using the HTML5 version of the YouTube player, no browser plugins (i.e., Flash) are required to watch videos.
Unfortunately there are some caveats, prime among them that not all videos are supported in the HTML5 player. Specifically, videos with advertising, captions, or annotations won’t render properly. In general, the HTML5 version of the player is also not as robust and polished as the default Flash YouTube player, but iPad owners will certainly be grateful the option is there once they’re iconically sitting on the couch browsing video.
2. Netflix

Yes, it’s one of the few paid services on this list, but of course if you’re already a Netflix subscriber you’re going to love that it’s coming to the iPad. If you’re not a subscriber, you can check out a free two-week trial and instantly stream TV shows and movies to your shiny new iPad, plus manage your queue.
3. Vimeo

Almost immediately after YouTube announced its HTML5 player, popular video site Vimeo followed suit. You should be able to follow the “Switch to HTML5 player” link below compatible videos to check out Vimeo vids on your iPad; the company says about 90% of the videos uploaded within the past year should be supported in the HTML5 player, although a smaller percentage of older videos are likely to have HTML5-compatible counterparts. Vimeo also cautions that the HTML5 player is still in beta testing, so don’t be too surprised by the occasional bit of bugginess here and there as well.
4. TED Talks

If you’re not already familiar with the huge collection of TED Talks, walk don’t run and check out these up-to-18-minute inspirational videos from thought leaders, experts, and world changers from the annual conference held in Long Beach, CA (plus a number of satellite conferences held every year worldwide). In anticipation of the iPad launch, TED has added HTML5 support to its player, making it viewable on Apple’s tablet as well as on the iPhone or iPod touch.
5. Flickr

Perennially popular photo and video sharing site Flickr has also prepped HTML5 video player support in anticipation of the iPad launch. They may be limited to 90 seconds, but they’re likely to be some of the most eye-catching and artistic short-form videos around.
6. The New York Times

Thanks to underlying support from video provider Brightcove’s HTML5 technology, the New York Times’ video section will be viewable on the iPad from day one. For newsy content organized by topic, this is likely to be a popular video hub for newshounds.
7. Time. Inc.

Also due to its choice of Brightcove as a video provider, Time Inc.’s video section features HTML5 support and will be playable on the iPad from launch day, as well.
8. ABC, CBS, NBC

Though all three networks will be handling it slightly differently, ABC, CBS, and NBC will all have support for video playback on the iPad at launch. ABC will release an actual app, while CBS will stream content through the Safari browser and NBC will rely on its iPhone-friendly mobile site to stream content. This can help you get your TV fix until the highly rumoured Hulu iPad app is finally unveiled.
9. Ustream

Looking for a live video fix? Ustream will have you covered on launch day with its iPad app. Users can browse streams and take advantage of all of Ustream’s social and chat features.
10. MySpace

Thanks to their addition of HTML5 support, MySpace will be offering video content to iPad owners as well. Visitors to Myspace.com will get a customized experience specifically for the iPad, along with the opportunity to browse and play the site’s collection of full HD trailers at 1080p resolution.
… And More
Sites are announcing either HTML5 support or iPad apps faster than we can even keep up with them. Apple itself maintains a list of sites that will be iPad ready to serve up video content. Are there others you know of not on either of these lists yet? Let us know in the comments!

Netflix Streaming Coming to iPhone and iPod Touch, Too par Samuel Axon Samedi 3 Avril 2010 :: Mashable! :: RSS
Netflix released an app for Apple’s new iPad, allowing subscribers who bought the device on launch day to access the service’s vast library of streaming films and television. The iPad won’t be stealing all of the thunder from the already-popular iPhone and iPod touch, however; a Netflix Watch Instantly app is in the works for those devices, too.
Netflix made that clear in a very brief blog post today:
Steve Swasey, VP of Corporate Communications, here. Terrific response to our news today about Netflix on the iPad. For those of you asking whether Netflix will be on the iPhone and iPod Touch: We wouldn’t invite you to dinner without planning to serve dessert. In other words, we’re working on it so stay tuned.
We already knew that a Netflix app for the iPhone and iPod touch was a possibility because Netflix has been asking users for their opinions on a hypothetical iPhone/iPod touch app in online surveys. Given that an iPad app has already been released and that the iPad and the iPhone are very similar platforms, you can understand why we’re not surprised.
This is just another step in a long march for Netflix. The service started out mailing DVDs to customers, but it has signed numerous film and TV studios to provide content for its Watch Instantly streaming service, which is now the main draw for many tech-savvy folks. More recently, video game consoles like the Nintendo Wii, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 have been updated with Netflix streaming capability.
Plans start at $8.99 per month. Available films and shows include 30 Rock, Weeds, King of the Hill, 24, Julie and Julia, The Proposal, Angels & Demons, The Sixth Sense and numerous others.

Waiting in Line for the iPad [VIDEO] par Brenna Ehrlich Samedi 3 Avril 2010 :: Mashable! :: RSS

Coke Zero to Stream Final Four Concert Live on Facebook Walls par Christina Warren Samedi 3 Avril 2010 :: Mashable! :: RSS
Hey, the iPad isn’t the only big event on April 3 — the two semifinal games in the NCAA Final Four tournament are also taking place! Before the games begin, Coke Zero will kick off a huge concert at 1:45pm ET that will stream live on Facebook. This is the first time that a live event has been streamed on Facebook from a sporting event.
To get the word out about the Coke Zero Countdown — hosted by Ryan Seacrest and featuring Darius Rucker and the band Daughtry — Coke Zero, Papa Johns, Best Buy and several other companies are spreading the word on their Facebook pages using a new promotional tool called Wall Apps.
Wall Apps is a new product available from the social media management company Vitrue. Vitrue is the same company that powers Apple’s App Store Facebook Page. Wall Apps is exactly what it sounds like — a range of applications that can be activated and accessed from Facebook wall posts. So instead of clicking on a link and redirecting from your stream to another page, you can play video, look at a slideshow, get a coupon and create user polls.

Vitrue says that brands are able to get 110 times the reach using the Wall compared to other areas of a Facebook Page, like tabs. Users are more likely to interact with an app or a feature if it can exist inside the Wall than if they have to go to another screen.
Coke Zero, Best Buy, Papa Johns and the band Daughtry are all using Wall App polls to promote the main Coke Zero Countdown event. Because the polls can be customized by the page owner, each brand can ask their own questions and then fans can respond and add comments directly to the wall posting.
We think Wall Apps has some amazing potential. As an end user, I prefer to interact with brands in my newsfeed. For brands, it keeps fans engaged — a crucial part of using Facebook as a marketing platform.

Because Vitrue also has an analytics system built into its suite of tools, brands can trace and see which campaigns work best — so if one type of poll or graphic has a really positive effect on traffic, but another poll doesn’t, marketers can make better decisions in the future.
As Facebook, Twitter and other social media platforms take a larger role in branded campaigns, we expect to see a multitude of tools built on top of these platforms.
What do you think of the Wall Apps concept? Let us know in the comments.

iPad Accessories: A Quick Guide to Apple’s Official Add-Ons par Amy-Mae Elliott Samedi 3 Avril 2010 :: Mashable! :: RSS
The minimum you’ve forked out (or are planning to fork out) for the Apple iPad is $499, so paying out for accessories on top of that might sting a little.
To try and help you decide what’s actually worth spending extra money on, we’ve taken a look at the official accessories available from Apple. It’s up to you whether or not you really need them.
Whether you’re hoping to watch iPad movies on your big screen TV, type with a full-size keyboard, or transfer your pics to your ‘Pad on the go, read on for the accessories you may want to invest in.
The iPad Keyboard Dock

Overview
How Much? $69
When’s It Due? Late April
Apple pitches the Keyboard Dock as a “useful home base” for your iPad. The aluminum keyboard is attached to a dock for syncing and charging your new device via USB hook-up with your computer.
Verdict
Although the iPad’s lack of multi-tasking makes it unlikely to replace the laptop altogether, Apple is offering a special version of iWork for the device. So if you do hope to get all productive on your iPad, the software’s there for you, and you may want a physical keyboard for extended periods of typing. As well as a full-size, familiar Apple keyboard, this offers shortcut keys keys to the home screen, search, display settings, picture frame mode and screen lock. However, be aware that due to where the dock connector is on the iPad, it can only be used in portrait mode.
If you plan to do any kind of typing on your iPad that’s longer than a tweet or search term, then $70 for this keyboard is going to seem like money well spent in the long run, even though it may hurt a little as you swipe the plastic at the point of purchase.
The iPad Dock

Overview
How Much? $29
When’s It Due? April 3
With the iPad Dock, you get easy access to a dock connector port for syncing or charging, and an audio line out for connecting to powered speakers.
Verdict
If you like to securely dock-and-charge rather than balance your iPad on your desk and hope no one trips over the wire, this might be a good option for you. The dock doubles as a stand, so you can use the iPad as a digital photo frame while charging, for example.
In addition to a line out for audio (cable not included) the dock boasts another standard connector that will work with the iPad Dock Connector to VGA Adapter and the iPad Camera Connection Kit. As the iPad works with Bluetooth keyboards, this accessory (along with your existing keyboard) offers a cheaper way of re-creating the Keyboard Dock above.
The iPad Camera Connection Kit

Overview
How Much? $29
When’s It Due? Late April
The iPad Camera Connection Kit lets you hook up a camera to your iPad via USB or transfer photo and video content onto it directly from an SD card.
Verdict
The iPad has no USB ports. If you want to use that lovely 9.7-inch display to show off your fantastic photos and home movie footage, this $29 accessory is going to be a must-have.
The kit offers two elements — the first is a USB interface for cameras and camcorders that will allow you to send content to your iPad (note that a USB cable is not included). The second is an SD card reader. Either interface will automatically open up the Photos app on the iPad, and unless someone comes up with a (hacked) workaround, they can only be used to get photo and video files onto your Apple device. Support for RAW files might well make this a pro-snapper’s favorite way to quickly view images on a larger screen while out and about.
The iPad Dock Connector to VGA Adapter

Overview
How Much? $29
When’s It Due? April 3
This will get your iPad content onto any big screen that uses a VGA connector, such as a TV, monitor or projector.
Verdict
If you’re planning on wowing the board with an iPad-based presentation (iWork for iPad offers a special version of Keynote) then this little gadget is going to be a must. Just be sure your presentation, slideshow, or video is formatted for landscape, as this is the only option for big screen display.
Incidentally, initial reports suggest Keynote works really well on the iPad. That’s where the goodness stops though, as you can’t project or display Safari on the big screen, so there’s no way to turn your giant plasma into an Internet display, for example. In addition, the old-fashioned VGA connection won’t stream modern HDCP-protected content (such as iTunes HD movies, for example) which is a bit of a problem if you were hoping to pay good money for films in iTunes, stick them on your iPad, and hook it up to the big screen.

iPad is Here par Adam Ostrow Samedi 3 Avril 2010 :: Mashable! :: RSS
In just a few minutes (9am ET), Apple stores will open the doors and customers who either pre-ordered or got in line early enough will get their hands on an iPad.
We’ve already covered the device extensively in the months leading up to today (full coverage here) — including many of the iPad apps that have already been released on iTunes and this week’s media blitz – but later this morning some of our staff will be getting their own iPads to bring you hands-on analysis.
We’ll be updating this post throughout the day with links to our latest coverage, as well as photos and video from Apple stores around the country, where some of our staffers are stationed (we got an interview with the first guy in line at one of New York’s Apple store earlier in the week). Be sure to add links to your photos and video as well in the comments!

Lil Wayne Blogs… From Prison par Adam Ostrow Samedi 3 Avril 2010 :: Mashable! :: RSS
Celebrities using social media to communicate with fans has become so commonplace it’s no longer newsworthy when a big celeb jumps on the bandwagon –- except when they do so from prison.
Lil Wayne is no stranger to social media –- he’s the second most popular artist on MySpace, has blogged about sports for ESPN and recently began tweeting. But last month, the rapper was sentenced to a year in prison on a weapons charge, an incident one would think might prevent him from utilizing social media channels.
However, Wayne has launched WeezyThanxYou.com, posting his first blog update on Friday. In it, he writes, “During my prison stint, I want my fans to know I love you. I want all of you to know that I appreciate all the mail I get, and this is my way of saying thank you.”
Wayne also says that his sports commentary will resume, writing, “Real soon, you can catch me blogging for ESPN again thank you espn for not letting my passion for sports perish.” He also responds to letters that have been sent to him in prison from fans. There are even “Free Weezy” T-Shirts available for $29.99 (perhaps this is why his label is called “Young Money”).

It appears that Lil Wayne’s new site isn’t a case of celebrities getting special treatment in jail, however. It was put together by Karen Civil, who works in online marketing at the rapper’s label. She told me in an email last night, “Wayne writes hand written letters giving updates on his time, and also answering questions from fans. The letter is re written to his blog.”
Civil says that we won’t see a return to Twitter or MySpace updates from jail — which would be a bit more challenging logistically — but that fans of the seemingly ubiquitous artist can expect to hear some new material during his prison stint. According to Civil, Lil Wayne is “featured on a few projects that will be released during his incarceration.”
Lil Wayne’s blog from jail serves as yet another example of how social media is changing the relationship between brands and their fan bases – even if a pen and paper needs to temporarily take the place of an @reply.
